24-year-old Edgar Cheung Ka-long, winner of fencing gold medalist in Tokyo Olympics hails from a sports family

26th July 2021 – (Hong Kong)  Hong Kong’s 24-year-old Edgar Cheung Ka-long defeated Czech’s Alexander Choupenitch by 15:10 in the top 4 men’s foil individual event in the Tokyo Olympics and advanced into the finals. He fought against Daniele Garozzo from Italy at 8.10pm (Hong Kong Time) and won the first gold medal for Hong Kong.

Citizens cheered for Cheung during the Tokyo Olympics at APM Mall this evening.

Cheung Ka Long (born on 10th June, 1997), born and raised in Hong Kong was dubbed the “Young Fencing God” after winning the Asian Fencing Championships in April 2016. He made Hong Kong’s history to become the first individual Asian foil event champion. He was also the first athlete to win the Olympic gold medal after the handover of Hong Kong to the Mainland.

Cheung’s parents are both basketball players. His father worked in the construction industry and was also a member of the Hong Kong A1 Division Championship.  In 1987, he represented the police team and won the league championship.

Cheung has been a frequent visitor to the basketball court since he was a child. He has learned basketball earlier than fencing. He has been a fan of the Bulls since he was a child. When Cheung was 15 years old, he had not yet entered the adult Hong Kong team, but his father forked out money and asked Cheung to participate in the FIFA World Cup with his seniors.

He graduated from North Point Government Primary School in 2009 and Primary school attended North Point Government Primary School and he studied high school at Ying Wa College ITCS  and Lam Tai Fai College. He dropped out of school during Secondary Four to become a full-time athlete.

In the 2014 Asian Junior Championships, Cheung bagged 4 gold medals and joined the Hong Kong team. In September 2014, Cheung represented Hong Kong in the fencing competition of the Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea, and won the bronze medal in the men’s foil team competition. In 2015, Cheung played for the second time and won the third place in the Asian Championship. On 14th April , 2016, in the men’s foil category of the 2016 Asian Fencing Championships held in Wuxi, China, 19-year-old Cheung defeated South Korea’s Asian gold medalist Heo Jun, Japanese world champion Yuki Ota, and China’s Olympics gold medal winner Lei Sheng and Japan’s World Youth Champion Takahiro Shikine. He eventually won the individual gold medal and the Asian championship, becoming Hong Kong’s first individual Asian champion, and also qualified for Olympic Games Rio 2016 but lost to Brazil in the 16th round. On 6th April, 2017, he successfully won the men’s foil individual event in the World Youth Championship.
