15th January 2024 – (Cupertino) Apple is poised to introduce its latest iteration, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, later this year. A comprehensive preview, based on a series of reports and leaks, suggests that consumers can anticipate a series of design refinements and enhanced connectivity features.

According to information obtained by MacRumors, prototypes indicate potential alterations to the iPhone’s hardware interface. Notably, the Action Button, which replaced the traditional Mute/Ring slider and was introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro models, is receiving renewed attention. Apple is reportedly experimenting with various design options for this element, including adjustments to its size and its integration into the phone’s frame.

The Action Button facilitates a multitude of functions, from quickly launching the camera to accessing the Magnifier or Translate features, all customisable via Shortcuts. Apple’s deliberations on the button’s configuration suggest a possible shift to a flush design and the exploration of unifying the volume buttons—a departure from their current separate state.

In addition, speculation surrounds a new Capture button, designed to offer users expedited access to video and photographic capabilities. This could potentially be positioned opposite the Action Button and might feature a design flush with the phone’s frame.

The forthcoming software update for the iPhone series is expected sooner than initially anticipated, further heightening consumer anticipation.

Beyond the user interface, a significant leap in connectivity is expected. A research note from Haitong International Securities analyst Pu reveals that Apple may differentiate the upcoming Pro models by equipping them with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem, reserving the X70, which powers the entire iPhone 15 range, for the standard iPhone 16 models.

The Snapdragon X75, unveiled in February 2023, offers advancements in carrier aggregation and 5G performance, promising faster download and upload speeds. Additionally, it boasts a more compact design and improved power efficiency. With support for the latest 5G Advanced standard, the X75 is poised to usher in what Qualcomm terms an “evolution towards 6G,” with AI and machine learning enhancements to optimize 5G functionality.

Apple’s marketing strategy for the iPhone 16 Pro series is likely to highlight the 5G Advanced support, mirroring its approach with LTE Advanced in the iPhone 6s era.

While rumours have circulated regarding Apple’s own 5G modem development, challenges have purportedly delayed its debut until possibly 2025 or later. Consequently, Apple has extended its agreement with Qualcomm through 2026, ensuring the use of their modems in upcoming iPhones.
