26th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) Following a number of local universities’ earlier proposals that they would no longer collect membership fees for the student union on their campuses, President and Vice-Chancellor, Baptist University President Alex Wai Ping-kong said when attending an event this morning (26th) that he had communicated with the Baptist University’s Student Union. The membership fees will no longer be collected, but he emphasised that the university will not cut ties with the student union.
The University of Hong Kong, CUHK, City University, PolyU and Lingnan University have successively announced that they will no longer charge membership fees for the Student Union. Among them, Lingnan University stated on the 15th of this month that in recent years, it has received complaints from the public, students and parents about the student union dues. It mainly believes that it is inappropriate to collect fees and tuition fees in a bundled manner.
