20th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) Chief Executive Carrie Lam said before attending the executive meeting today (20th) that the Tokyo Olympics is about to begin. A total of 46 Hong Kong athletes will participate in the games, which is the most in history. It is also the first time that the government has purchased the broadcasting rights for the Olympics. The production team is ready and several TV stations will produce few thousand hours of live broadcast programmes. RTHK which will not broadcast live will produce highlights of the games instead. She appealed to the public to support the national team and Hong Kong athletes.
Speaking of the epidemic, Lam said that there have been no local confirmed cases in Hong Kong for more than 40 consecutive days. She thanked the public for their belief in the vaccination program which resulted in the daily rise of vaccination rate.
As of last night, 42% of the population have received the first dose, it is estimated that a total of 70% of the population will be vaccinated by the end of September.
Regarding the oath-taking of district council members, Lam said that the preparatory work is nearing the end. As for the compensation issue, she only said that it can only be dealt with “legally”. She also said that there will be three important elections in the next year, and she will not see any by-elections during her term of office.
When asked about Hongkongers migrating overseas, Lam said that everyone has personal considerations and that the government respects citizens’ freedom of entry and exit. She also pointed out that Hong Kong’s prospects are very good and that “now is the best time” to work hard for Hong Kong.
