20th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) Chan Kin-man, former associate professor of Sociology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong he has served various positions in the public services, and set up a number of non-governmental organisations. He is currently the director of the Hong Kong Civil Education Foundation and member of the executive committee of the Hong Kong Democratic Development Network.

In March, 2013, Chan, together with Benny Tai and Chu Yiu-ming, initiated the nonviolent civil disobedience campaign “Occupy Central with Love and Peace”, to call for universal suffrage in Hong Kong, which sowed the seeds for the now globally-known Umbrella Movement in 2014.

In 2019, Chan was sentenced to 16 months in prison for his role in the Umbrella Movement.

Chan who was released from prison, said on Facebook today (20th) that he has accepted the invitation of National Chengchi University to become a visiting professor of the school for one year. In addition to teaching, he will continue to write and update books in the future. He plans to return to Hong Kong in 1 year.

Chan also stated on the radio program today that he had received an invitation in prison a year ago. Due to the epidemic situation, the visa was only obtained a few days ago. Chan said that he would teach social movements in Taiwan and on China’s current affairs. He was worried about violating the “Hong Kong National Security Law” but believes that the legal boundary is blurred. He said that he would not mention personal political opinions, and that he would lay out different perspectives when teaching, hoping to have more exchanges with students. Chan also pointed out that the political environment in Hong Kong has affected his mood. During his stay in Taiwan, he will not attend too many public activities.
