17th January 2025 – (Beijing) China’s population has experienced a significant decline for the second consecutive year, with the National Bureau of Statistics reporting a drop of 2.08 million, or 0.15%, to 1.409 billion in 2023. This downturn, exacerbated by a record-low birth rate and the aftermath of COVID-19-related deaths following the cessation of strict lockdowns, raises concerns about the long-term implications for the country’s economic growth potential.
The latest figures reveal a stark contrast to the population decline of 850,000 recorded in 2022, marking the first decrease since 1961, during the Great Famine of the Mao Zedong era. The accelerating decline highlights the pressing demographic challenges that China faces, with experts warning that the combination of an ageing population and a shrinking workforce could hinder economic progress in the years to come.
