25th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) Angus Ng Ka Long, Hong Kong badminton player defeated the Mexican players in 2 straight sets in the Olympics. However, it was not the victory that netizens talked about but rather the disappearance of the SAR regional emblem on his black T-shirt.

Nicholas Muk, a member of the DAB and a high school teacher condemned Angus on social media for wearing a team uniform without a regional flag to represent Hong Kong, China. Muk said that “If you don’t want to represent Hong Kong, please choose to withdraw!” It is understood that some DAB executives have contacted Muk to understand the situation. Muk said that he did not target athletes and believed that the Badminton Association should explain why some players did not have jerseys with the regional flag.

Even the former Hong Kong Standing Committee member and former Legislative Councillor Nathan Law, who is now in exile in the UK and wanted by the Hong Kong police, has posted on Facebook about the Olympics. However, Law also tried to politicise the event by understanding the background of local athletes from Hong Kong to know if they are pro-Beijing.

Ng Ka-long responded quickly to doubts, saying that he currently does not have an attire sponsor, so all the clothes on the field were prepared by himself. Many netizens doubted his allegiance to the government as he happened to be wearing a ‘black’ T-shirt which would be regarded as ‘pro-democracy’ despite the words ‘Hong Kong China’ were prominently printed on the back. He said that he is proud of the Hong Kong team and hopes that Hongkongers will pay more attention to the performance of the athletes rather than to his jersey.

Ma Fung-kwok, member of the Provisional Legislative Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong from for Election Committee constituency and Sports, Performing Arts, Culture and Publication pointed out that according to his understanding, Angus Ng had provided several jerseys to his after his contract ended with the sponsor, and he chose to bring his own. Ma said that he supports Ng’s statement and hopes that he can concentrate on the competition.

Others think that some critics are “excessively sensitive” whenever they see the black shirts. They believe that those people concerned should apologise to the athletes.
