16th January 2025 – (Jerusalem) Hamas and Israel have reached a pivotal ceasefire agreement aimed at halting the violence in Gaza that has persisted for over 15 months. The deal, confirmed by mediators, is set to take effect on Sunday, 19th January, and includes provisions for the release of hostages held by Hamas.
The accord delineates a phased approach, commencing with a six-week ceasefire during which Israeli forces are expected to gradually withdraw from the Gaza Strip. In exchange, hostages taken by Hamas will be released alongside Palestinian prisoners currently held by Israel.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced the ceasefire during a press conference in Doha, indicating that negotiations with both parties are ongoing to ensure the deal’s implementation.
In response to the announcement, Palestinians in Gaza celebrated, thronging the streets amidst severe shortages of essential supplies. Ghada, a displaced mother of five, expressed her mixed emotions, stating, “I am happy, yes, I am crying, but those are tears of joy.” Conversely, families of Israeli hostages in Tel Aviv shared their relief and joy at the prospect of reuniting with their loved ones.
While the Israeli government is expected to approve the agreement, the final endorsement will require confirmation from the security cabinet and the broader government, with votes scheduled for Thursday. Despite some opposition from hardliners within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, the deal appears poised for acceptance.
US President Joe Biden hailed the agreement, noting its potential to facilitate humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians and reunite hostages with their families. He expressed hope that the ceasefire would mark a significant turning point in the conflict.
If successful, the ceasefire could alleviate tensions not only in Gaza but across the wider Middle East, where the conflict has exacerbated instability in regions such as the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Lebanon, and Iran. The initial phase of the deal includes the release of 33 Israeli hostages, prioritising women, children, and men over 50.
The agreement follows extensive negotiations led by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, with support from the United States. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasised the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict.
