Taxi scam alert as passenger attempts to use FPS for his fare in Hong Kong

18th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A recent video circulating online has raised concerns about a potential taxi scam in Hong Kong. The footage, captured by a dashcam, shows a man wearing a black coat and a cap entering a taxi and insisting on using the Faster Payment System (FPS) for his fare. He claimed he needed to travel to Tin Sam before heading to Shenzhen Bay. When the driver suggested alternative payment methods, such as Octopus, PayMe, or Alipay, the passenger remained adamant about using FPS, proposing to transfer HK$400 and receive HK$200 in cash for the remainder of the fare.

The driver, recognising the unusual request, immediately refused, prompting the passenger to exit the taxi without further ado. This incident has sparked a flurry of speculation among netizens, many of whom suspect the passenger may have been attempting to deceive the driver. Reports suggest that similar scams have recently targeted taxi drivers in areas like Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, where passengers have claimed to have made electronic transfers only to later deny receiving funds.

The taxi driver’s experience reflects a broader concern over the safety and integrity of electronic payment systems in Hong Kong’s transportation sector. With the rise of digital transfers, the potential for fraudulent schemes has also increased, leaving drivers vulnerable to exploitation. Observers urge caution and recommend that taxi drivers remain vigilant when confronted with requests for unconventional payment methods.
