Woman scammed over HK$55,000 via online transfer after receiving SMS from purported courier company

27th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) The police received a report from a woman (40 years old) at a hotel on Pak Hok Ting Street in Sha Tin at about 6pm in the evening today (27th). She said that she received a SMS earlier from a courier company saying that she needed to pay for postage fee for a parcel.

She was requested to pay the amount to an account via online banking. The victim deposited approximately HK$55,000 into an account as instructed, but later suspected that she had been deceived, so she asked the police for assistance. Police officers arrived at the scene. After preliminary investigation, the case was classified as obtaining property by deception and was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Team of the Shatin Police District for follow-up. No one has been arrested yet.
