30th July 2021 – (Hong Kong) As the Hong Kong government stopped renewing work visas for the Taiwanese employees of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong, 7 of the 8 Taiwanese staff members in the Hong Kong Office returned to Taiwan by plane in June. The last Hong Kong staff member, Ni Bo-chia, director of Far East Trade Service Inc., Hong Kong Branch Office left for Taiwan on Friday (30th) afternoon.
The Hong Kong Office will be assisted by Hong Kong employees to maintain operations in the future. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) reiterated on Friday that the Taiwan office in Hong Kong always aims to ensure uninterrupted services for the people in Taiwan and Hong Kong to ensure that the rights and interests of the people in Taiwan and Hong Kong will not be affected by Ni’s return to Taiwan. At present, the business operations of the office are as usual and have not been affected for the time being.
However, the office may face the worst situation, and the government has prepared a plan to deal with it. The MAC also criticised the close exchanges between Taiwan and Hong Kong’s economic and trade personnel, and citizens are not contented to see that the Hong Kong government detracts from the relationship and functions of the Hong Kong office in the two places due to unnecessary political considerations.
